CORAL & TUSK
Coral & Tusk celebrates the theme of adornment as expressed through the craft, creativity and incredible resourcefulness of native cultures everywhere. Founded in 2007 by Stephanie Housley with her husband Chris Lacinak, Coral & Tusk add their signature story-telling spirit to every room of the home with their embroidered pillows, artwork, table linens, dolls, accessories and more.
Collaborations with VOLK Furniture and Pollack Fabrics apply Stephanie's distinct style of mark-making to unexpected new products and places while retaining the charm innate to Coral & Tusk. Press nods and features in Vogue Magazine, World of Interiors, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Martha Stewart Living and many more further set Stephanie apart from other textile designers that use embroidery techniques.
Stephanie's close, collaborative relationship with her partners in India ensures that every Coral & Tusk piece maintains an uncompromising devotion to quality, for which she also (loudly and often!) thanks her incredibly talented Brooklyn team. The blend of exuberance and refinement now synonymous with a Coral & Tusk embroidery is the natural by-product of the careful consideration paid to detail and embellishment both locally and abroad. Fine but not precious, a Coral & Tusk pillow, artwork or accessory is sure to entertain daily and provide enjoyment for generations.
"Drawing is my passion. Embroidering these drawings makes them come to life."
Born and raised in the Ohio Valley, Stephanie comes from a long line of Appalachian women who could make something from nothing. Her great-grandmother made lace while her grandmother made dolls, each instilling Stephanie with a deep appreciation for self-expression through craft. First enchanted by the natural world during childhood trips to the Eastern seaboard, traveling, drawing and embroidery were intrinsic to her childhood and development into a textile and home product designer.
While the East Coast remains a beloved destination, Stephanie's frequent travels now span the globe. Narratives spun from magical experiences, naive art, lesser-known histories, and natural artifacts collected from Wyoming to Cappadoccia to Nepal inform every one of Stephanie's illustrations and textile designs.
Stephanie's creative process is a special alchemy of story-telling, illustration, machine embroidery and hand-finishing. Trained informally at home and then formally at RISD, Stephanie first creates her irreverent characters and bold pattern designs as original pencil drawings before she painstakingly redraws them stitch by stitch using specialized software. Designs are machine-embroidered at cut-and-sew workshops that Stephanie set up in India and are then finished by hand in her Brooklyn studio. From concept and original drawing all the way to the finished product, a single design takes months to produce.
Stephanie's vision draws upon the spirit of her foremothers while always paying homage to the natural world around her. Every Coral & Tusk product retains the hand-drawn allure of Stephanie's original illustration, now with the satisfying tactile quality of stitches on cloth.
