Best of the West
Rattlesnakes and tumbleweeds aren't your typical home-decor references, but Coral & Tusk's designer Stephanie Housley pulls it off with panache. For her latest textile collection, the designer (who splits her time between Brooklyn, New York and Bondurant, Wyoming) created embroidered linen goods with fanciful depictions of desert natives - flowering agaves, blooming barrel cactus, and curious armadillos that cavort across cocktail napkins, tea towels and pillows. Housley immersed herself in the study of the Southwest flora and fauna to produce the hand-drawn illustrations that serve as the basis for the intricately stitched designs.

"We were inspired by the luxury of a private garden attached to a spacious hotel room. Our design brings the comforting colors and restful ambience of an english garden into the scheme. A floral light fixture and contenporary art echo a garden, while coffee-table books, a well-stocked bar cart, and open fire ensure that this room is made for relaxation. We chose paint colors that remind us of the beauty of a garden in the hazy evening light of summer - faded pinks and greens with a background of warm neutrals."

Where Women Create
Stephanie Housley Coral & Tusk
"As a child growing up outside Cincinnati, Ohio, Stephanie Housley loved drawing, coloring, and "making stuff." It's no wonder Stephanie taught herself how to embroider at an early age..."

"When Stephanie Housley sits down to sketch a cute character for her nature-driven home goods line, Coral & Tusk, she doesn't just draw a lamb wearing a flower crown or a rabbit in a waistcoat—she invents its entire backstory. 'Habitat plays a big part in what we do,' the RISD-trained designer told Racked during a recent visit to her Williamsburg studio. 'For example, a fennec fox lives in the Sahara, so I drew him in a yurt, and the arctic fox lives in an igloo. I love to imagine what these animals' homes are like, and how they decorate.'"

Behind Coral & Tusk's Fall Collection
"A RISD-trained textile designer, Stephanie starts her process by putting pencil to paper. Once she has a new little animal friend, scene or pattern in mind, the design gets translated into stitches. Everything is finished at the Coral & Tusk loft in Williamsburg. And just this week, they launched their new Fall 2014 line so we asked Stephanie to give us a little peek into her process and inspiration."
